1. Specific

Your objective should be specific and directed. Rather than “I want more traffic to my website,” say “I want to drive more traffic to my product page.” A clear goal enables you to concentrate your efforts in the correct direction.

Example:

  • Specific: “Gain 1,000 new Instagram followers on our business account.”

2. Measurable

If you can’t measure your goal, how will you know that you’ve achieved it? Measurable goals have numbers that indicate progress. Tracking lets you know what works and what doesn’t.

Example:

  • “Get 500 new leads from our Facebook ad campaign.”

3. Achievable

Your target needs to be reasonable. It’s wonderful to stretch, but don’t set yourself up for defeat. Think about your time, budget, and staff. Stretch goals are fine—but they have to be realistic.

Example:

  • If you normally gain 100 new email subscribers a month, trying to have 10,000 in a single month could be too aggressive. Instead, shoot for 200–300 and build upon that.

4. Relevant

Does the goal fit with your overall business strategy? A relevant goal aligns with your big-picture marketing or company objectives. It should make sense for where you are and what you’re trying to achieve.

Example:

  • If your main business goal is to increase online sales, a relevant marketing goal might be to improve your product landing page or run a targeted email campaign for promotions.

5. Time-bound

Each objective requires a deadline. A time-limited objective keeps you on track and encouraged. It also enables you to schedule tasks and monitor progress within a defined time scale.

Example:

  • “Grow newsletter subscriptions by 20% in the next 30 days.”
